Where We are in Time and Place

Central idea:

Lebanon has special characteristics that distinguish it from other countries.

Lines of inquiry:

· The physical characteristics of where we live (geography).

· The heritage of where we live (civics).

· The places and things you’d like a visitor to see. ( historical sites)

Notes

We have started our new planner. Please send any photos/pictures, books, guide books and other resources that are related to our planner.

During this unit, there will be several outings where the children will go on field trips to explore Lebanon’s special characteristics, heritage and important sites. Our first outing will be to Beiteddine and Deir El Kamar. Details will be sent to you with your child.

May is coming up. Enjoy the sunny days. When it’s our turn at AUB park, please apply sunscreen on your child’s face in the morning and send a cap.

Friday

Locate Lebanon on the world map. What do you notice? What countries border Lebanon?

In what ways do you think Lebanon is special and different from other countries? Write in your Home Journal. You can support your reflection with pictures.

Monday

Show each of the following numbers in five different ways 523 / 408

1- standard form 2- expanded form 3- word form 4- model form 5- place value form

Use different resources to explore and research important sites that are worth visiting in Lebanon. Create a list of those places. Choose one or two and write in your Home Journal what is unique about this/these places.

Adding pictures or drawings will always support your presentation, and make it more visual.

Wednesday

We are exploring and comparing plane and solid shapes. Visit the following link to review information on plane and solid shapes. In your Math journal, use the ruler to draw a plane shape and list its characteristics.

Reading Week

Reading week has started with the children publishing a collective story they called An Adventure in Time. They are very proud and keen about the message they are delivering through their book.
A copy of this story book will be given to each child on a CD at the end of the term.

Today the children enjoyed A Song of a Tree, read to them by Dr. Charles who in turn, enjoyed having such an audience of wonderful listeners and thinkers.

Our plans for the week will continue with more activities:

Wednesday: Sharing our book : An Adventure in Time. Reading to other classes.

Thursday: Earth day- IC green. Wear green and anything showing your love to planet Earth.
Planting geraniums and other kinds of plants from the money collected during
our 'garage sale'.

Friday: Parent Volunteering to read.
Bring your favorite book for buddy reading with CE1.

Our activities for reading week will carry on for our passion for reading never ends.

An outing to Sukleen- Recycling Plastic

Last Friday, the children enjoyed the field trip to Sukleen. The objective behind this visit was to observe how plastic is recycled as an extension to our previous unit Save the Earth. This recycling branch is one of the very few in Lebanon.

The children were led in small groups by a supervisor who explained the process of recycling plastic. After that, the children asked interesting and meaningful questions. Tamara O suggested that people who do not recycle should be fined. Jad asked if the trash bins are cleaned regularly and how hygiene is handled.

Many suggestions were made on creating more awareness and adding more recycling bins in the neighborhoods to get people used to recycling as a 'practice' and a way of life. We were told that these children are the hopes for our future; when they grow up they'll be the change. We believe that change begins with us TODAY!

Grade 2 Updates

Hello all,

The past month has been filled with wonderful learning engagements and activities from our end of unit celebration to our portfolio sharing conferences. The children were enthusiastic to share their learning. The responses showed that the children are aware of their learning, their progress and were explicit in specifying what goals they need to set to improve further.

Last Monday was child's day. The children enjoyed having an outdoor snack at AUB campus.

Four more school days left till our Spring break. Please read the notes below regarding overdue books and egg hunt.
I wish each and everyone a relaxed and joyful break!

Home Learning Program

March 24th - March 31st

How the World Works

Central idea:

Central Idea: The Earth, sun, and moon are connected in a system and regulate our life

Lines of inquiry:

-the interaction among sun, moon and earth.

- the phenomena of day and night and the change of seasons

- the different phases of the moon and its effect on the tides

- how the sun and moon affect our life

Notes

On Wednesday, March 31st, we are going to have an ‘egg hunt’ at AUB. Each child is required to bring 3 dyed or decorated hardboiled eggs on that day.

The three sections will compete in the activity all together. Math activities such as estimation and graphing will follow the egg hunt.

Please make sure to return all overdue books to the library so that you’ll be able to check out readables for the holiday. Each child can check out up to five books.

Tips for the Holiday

Read on a daily basis. Do book in a bag activity in your Home Journals.

The holiday is an exciting time to meet people and explore new places. Keep a daily journal with photos/souvenirs to share in class after the vacation. Train tickets, brochures, etc. can all be interesting souvenirs to share.

If you go to a restaurant or to a supermarket, make an estimate of the sum of your bill. Remember to create a bench mark for your estimation. After you receive the bill, do the actual calculation. Is your estimate close to the actual number?

Thursday

Make an addition story problem that includes 2-digit numbers. Find the sum and write the strategy you used to solve your problem.

Friday

Use the book in the bag as a source to find words with long sound ‘o’.

Words with long “ o” sound include the following letter combinations:

o-e: home, ow: blow, oa: goat, o: so, ocean.

Make a list of these words in your Home Journal.

.

Monday

Do the Math worksheet that is sent home.

Tuesday

You are learning in class how the gravity from the moon affects the tide. In what way do you think the change of tides affect people? Sailors? Fishermen?

Write your thoughts and pictures in your Home Journal.

You can refer to the link below for further information on the topic.
